UK boosts AI computing with $1.3b investment

The UK has announced a £1 billion (US$1.3 billion) investment to improve its computing infrastructure for AI.

This plan aims to increase public compute capacity twentyfold over the next five years.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the plan during London Tech Week last month, alongside Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

As part of this initiative, the government will integrate two supercomputers, Isambard-AI in Bristol and Dawn in Cambridge, into an AI Research Resource (AIRR) system.

This project will involve collaboration with companies such as Nvidia, HPE, Dell, and Intel.

The Isambard supercomputer was officially launched by Peter Kyle, Secretary of State for Science, on July 17, 2025.

University College London researchers are using Isambard to develop AI tools for early cancer screening in the National Health Service, starting with prostate cancer.

The AI technology will analyze MRI scans to identify patients in need of treatment at an earlier stage.

The UK also plans to launch National Supercomputing Centres, starting in Edinburgh, to compete with global AI powers like the US, China, India, and Germany.
