Ubisoft proposes up to 200 job cuts at Paris HQ

Ubisoft is proposing to lay off up to 200 employees at its Paris headquarters.

The layoffs would be carried out through France’s voluntary collective termination process (RCC), which requires employee consent.

A Ubisoft spokesperson said the proposal is not final, and no decision will be made until a collective agreement is reached.

The move follows ongoing cost-cutting efforts, including studio closures in Halifax and Stockholm and the cancellation of six games, including the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake.

Ubisoft has also delayed seven other titles and recently mandated a five-day in-office workweek.

The company’s stock has fallen sharply, from around US$20 in 2021 to about US$1 today.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Key financial context needed to assess Ubisoft’s cost-cutting and restructuring

  • A new €200 million cost-cutting plan over two years has been announced, which lifts total spending cuts since 2023 to €500 million 1.
  • Details on cash reserves, net debt, and near-term debt maturities are not provided in the available material.
  • Without those figures, the proposed plan for up to 200 voluntary departures at the Paris headquarters, plus other reductions, cannot be weighed as a lasting fix or a short-term patch 1.
  • The expected euro impact from the headquarters staff reduction has not been spelled out, which leaves its share of the savings target unclear.

Ubisoft’s Paris headquarters plan could create a talent opportunity in non-production roles

  • Rival employers and recruiters can treat the Paris headquarters changes as a chance to hire.
  • The proposal covers up to 200 voluntary departures at the group’s Paris headquarters, while production studios are excluded; roles named include finance, legal, marketing, communication and public affairs 1.
  • Ubisoft’s five-days-a-week return-to-office mandate could nudge some staff toward the voluntary departure plan, if it moves forward 1.
  • Tech operators can reach out around any collective agreement outcome, then pitch flexible work options in offers 1.
