Uber commits nearly $500m to robotaxi firm Nuro: sources

Uber has committed nearly US$500 million to Nuro, according to two sources.

The investment supports its robotaxi plans with Nuro and electric vehicle maker Lucid.

Sources said Uber joined Nuro’s US$203 million series E funding round and later made a larger follow-on investment. The remaining funds are tied to milestones. These includes driverless testing later this year, passenger service by year-end, and a broader rollout next year.

Nuro, a Silicon Valley self-driving startup, previously made small delivery bots before pivoting in 2024 to license autonomous driving software to automakers and mobility companies. The company has raised US$2.3 billion to date and was valued at US$6 billion in its latest round.

The broader Uber-Lucid plan uses Lucid Gravity sport utility vehicles with Nuro software.

Uber initially agreed to buy at least 20,000 vehicles over six years, a target later expanded to at least 35,000.
