Trump Jr. backs social media firm with crypto focus

Donald Trump Jr. has acquired 350,000 shares of Thumzup Media Corp., a Los Angeles-based social media company, according to a regulatory filing on July 9, 2025.

The investment is valued at over US$4 million.

Thumzup operates an app that pays users to promote products on Instagram.

The company reported a US$2.2 million loss on only US$151 in revenue during the first quarter of this year.

Thumzup recently adopted a strategy of holding most of its liquid assets in Bitcoin, with current cryptocurrency holdings exceeding US$2 million.

It plans to expand this strategy to six additional cryptocurrencies, funded by a US$6 million private placement of convertible preferred stock completed last week.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Trump’s cryptocurrency evolution mirrors broader corporate adoption trends

Trump’s transformation from cryptocurrency critic to advocate represents a notable policy reversal in recent financial history.

In 2019, Trump publicly dismissed Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies as “not money” while emphasizing their volatility and potential for illegal activities 1.

This contrasts with his current promise to make America the “crypto capital of the world” and his family’s expanding portfolio of crypto-related investments across multiple businesses.

This pivot coincides with a significant surge in corporate Bitcoin adoption, with business accumulation increasing by 154% since 2024 across more than 2,000 companies, particularly in finance (35.7%), technology (16.8%), and real estate (9.7%) 2.

Thumzup’s strategy of holding over $2 million in Bitcoin despite minimal revenue ($151 in Q1) reflects this broader corporate trend of using cryptocurrency as a treasury asset rather than merely as a technology investment.

The timing of these investments aligns with market sentiment—60% of Americans familiar with cryptocurrency believe its value will increase with Trump’s return to office, suggesting political positioning may be influencing investment decisions 3.

2️⃣ Corporate crypto treasury strategies gain momentum despite operational challenges
