Trump family crypto venture plans a 62.3b token unlock

Trump family-backed crypto venture World Liberty Financial has proposed unlocking 62.3 billion WLFI governance tokens.

The move includes insiders’ tokens that were previously locked indefinitely, with no vesting schedule.

The company said early supporters holding 17 billion tokens would get a two-year cliff and a two-year linear vest.

Founders, team members, advisers, and partners holding 45.2 billion tokens would face a two-year cliff and a three-year vesting period.

About 4.5 billion tokens would be burned immediately if the proposal is approved.

Less than a week ago, CoinDesk reported the project used 5 billion WLFI as collateral on lending platform Dolomite to borrow US$75 million in stablecoins.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The token unlock proposal follows scrutiny over WLFI’s Dolomite borrowing

  • WLFI faced scrutiny after borrowing about US$75 million in stablecoins against its own tokens on Dolomite, a lending platform 1.
  • That single loan made WLFI’s collateral more than half of all assets on the platform, which analysts described as a significant concentration risk 2.
  • As debate spread, the team brushed it off as “FUD” (fear, uncertainty, and doubt), while the token slid about 8% to 10% to a record low amid warnings about liquidation and bad-debt risk tied to thin liquidity 3.
  • Separately, community members pushed for clearer details on token releases, pointing to falling over-the-counter prices and vague lockup terms for insiders 4.
  • WLFI said it would post a governance proposal on its forum within the week to unlock tokens for early holders through a structured, phased vesting plan 3.

The unlock tests a high-stakes model of political capital as crypto collateral

  • The episode draws attention to a risky decentralized finance (DeFi) approach where projects borrow against their own, often illiquid, governance tokens to raise cash without selling 1.
  • Earlier cases such as Wonderland, a crypto project that became a symbol of risky token-backed borrowing, ended up tied to “liquidation cascade” risk for lenders when token prices dropped fast 1.
  • WLFI adds a political angle, with one analysis arguing the Trump family’s influence sits at the center of its competitive positioning 5.
  • The WLFI token is described as a governance token that carries voting rights and does not offer equity or a revenue claim, so the unlock will test whether the market prices political influence over a connected protocol above direct financial returns 5.
