Tether leads $32.7m round in Spanish crypto exchange Bit2Me

Tether has made a strategic investment in Bit2Me, a Spanish digital asset platform, as part of an investment round expected to reach €30 million (US$32.7 million) in the coming months.

Bit2Me, based in Spain, provides cryptocurrency infrastructure and services to the Spanish-speaking market.

Tether, known for issuing the USDT stablecoin, will lead the funding round, with additional participation from other strategic investors.

The investment comes after Bit2Me obtained a European Union regulatory license and as it seeks to expand further into the EU and Latin American markets.

Bit2Me is also backed by Telefónica, Unicaja, Cecabank, BBVA, and Investcorp.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Regulatory compliance becomes a strategic asset in crypto partnerships

Bit2Me’s recent authorization under the EU’s MiCA regulation appears to be a key factor driving Tether’s €30 million investment.

The timing is notable, as this deal was announced shortly after Bit2Me became authorized under MiCA, which went into effect on December 30, 20241.

MiCA compliance allows crypto companies to operate across all 27 EU member states, providing significant market access that non-compliant firms cannot match2.

This regulatory authorization transforms compliance from a cost center into a valuable strategic asset that attracts major partnerships and investments.

The investment demonstrates how established crypto companies are increasingly valuing regulatory clarity and market access.

2️⃣ Tether uses partnerships to navigate its own regulatory challenges

This investment appears to be Tether’s strategy for gaining compliant market access despite its own regulatory difficulties.

Tether has faced significant regulatory scrutiny, including a 2019 lawsuit from the New York Attorney General alleging $850 million in missing funds, and admissions that it was only 74% backed by cash3.
