Tether invests in Ark Labs to put stablecoins on bitcoin
Tether, the issuer of USDT, invested in Ark Labs in a US$5.2 million funding round to bring programmable payments to the bitcoin network.
Ark Labs, the developer of Arkade, a system designed to enable faster transactions and app development on bitcoin, said the new funding brings its total raised to about US$7.7 million.
Tether said the funding will help expand infrastructure that could support stablecoins on bitcoin.
Arkade acts as an execution layer that developers can use to build services such as payment networks, lending tools and digital asset platforms.
🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Arkade tackles Lightning’s usability hurdles
- Arkade runs as a client-server protocol rather than a separate blockchain, batching off-chain transfers and settling them on Bitcoin 1.
- It relies on “virtual UTXOs” (VTXOs) that track a user’s share of a large shared on-chain output, unlike the Lightning Network’s two-party channels 2.
- The setup removes the need to manage payment channels or line up inbound liquidity for receiving funds, both common obstacles to Lightning Network adoption 2.
- Bitcoin mainnet trials included over 1,300 conference payments, where Arkade worked as a backend swap layer for existing Lightning wallets with no user-visible changes 3.
Tether’s investment connects to its Bitcoin roots
- The deal links back to USDT’s start on Bitcoin in 2014 through the Omni Layer protocol 4.
- Arkade Assets proposes native assets by embedding data in Bitcoin transactions, for example via OP_RETURN, a Bitcoin script feature that allows limited data to be attached to a transaction 5.
- The approach tries to avoid external indexers (specialized services that track and interpret blockchain data), while cutting bridge risk from wrapped tokens or centralization trade-offs from federated sidechains 5.
- ARK Invest research cites USDT supply at $187 billion as of late 2025/early 2026, which gives Tether a possible rail for USDT on Bitcoin that fits its push to widen stablecoin access on Bitcoin 4.
- Funding from Tether could also help spark payment networks, lending tools, and digital asset platforms built on Arkade, though that outcome remains prospective 6.
