Tencent Cloud, Ryde launch Weixin app for Chinese tourists in SG

Tencent Cloud has expanded its partnership with Ryde Group, a Singapore-based mobility and quick commerce firm, to launch a Weixin mini program for Chinese visitors in Singapore.

The new feature enables Chinese tourists to book Ryde rides directly within the Weixin (WeChat) app, with support for Simplified Chinese, fare display in RMB, and payment through Weixin/WeChat Pay.

Previously, Ryde integrated Tencent Cloud’s real-time communication technology to improve in-app communications.

Both companies said this move aims to make transportation more accessible for Chinese tourists in Singapore.

Ryde operates a mobility app offering carpooling, private hire, taxi, and delivery services.

Tencent Cloud is the cloud division of Tencent, a major technology company headquartered in China.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Ryde’s tourism play faces scale constraints

  • Ryde uses a Weixin mini program (lightweight apps inside Weixin (WeChat) that let users access services without a separate download) to reach Chinese tourists. Its small scale limits revenue capture. Ryde’s market cap is S$27.96 million 1 and FY 2024 revenue was 8.95 million 2. It trails Grab and Indonesia-based Gojek in Singapore.
  • First half 2024 revenue reached S$4.38 million. Net loss hit S$13.54 million 3. WeChat Pay integration removes payment friction for Chinese visitors. Impact hinges on Ryde’s share of Singapore’s ride-hailing market, which is likely small given its financial profile.
  • With limited market reach, the tie-up looks like a stopgap. It chases a niche segment and leaves the larger fight with better-funded rivals unresolved.

Payment infrastructure providers can ride the WeChat wave

  • The move fits rising demand from Singapore merchants to accept WeChat Pay and to deploy Weixin mini programs as Chinese tourism rebounds. Payment gateway providers like Airwallex, a global cross-border payments platform, already support Alipay and WeChat Pay acceptance for businesses without Chinese bank accounts 4. Hotels, attractions, and retailers will copy Ryde’s playbook.
  • SaaS platforms that build and manage mini programs for non-Chinese brands stand to gain. Chinese tourists expect seamless in-app experiences beyond payment acceptance. Setting up verified merchant accounts and maintaining mini programs is complex 4. Agencies and service firms can step in.
  • Investors can track payment processors and cross-border commerce firms with Singapore exposure. These firms help merchants adapt payments and experiences for international customers. The Ryde partnership supports a shift toward WeChat-native experiences for Chinese visitors across Southeast Asian tourism markets.
