Tencent, Alibaba eye investment in DeepSeek

Tencent and Alibaba are discussing investments in Chinese AI startup DeepSeek as it begins raising outside capital for the first time.

DeepSeek, which is owned by Chinese hedge fund High-Flyer Capital Management, is seeking at least US$300 million at a valuation above US$20 billion.

The talks are ongoing and the fundraising size and valuation could still change.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The round focuses on talent retention

  • A first outside round would set a valuation. That would give staff a clearer sense of what their stock options are worth and make it harder for rivals to lure them away 1.
  • Founder Liang Wenfeng has said the company’s toughest problem is not money. US export controls on advanced chips have been the bigger constraint 2.
  • DeepSeek is seeking to sell up to 3% of its equity. That would limit dilution while still meeting those goals 1.

China’s tech groups are following a familiar AI investment model

  • The talks echo US deals. Microsoft, Google, plus Amazon have backed AI labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic with money, cloud capacity, plus distribution 3.
  • A joint investment from Tencent and Alibaba would be unusual. It would suggest both companies want a strong domestic AI contender, though talks are still underway and terms may change 4.
  • Backing DeepSeek would also support a different path. The company has stressed software efficiency as US chip curbs bite. That approach uses less spending than many Western scaling efforts 2.
  • The deal could also tighten DeepSeek’s ties with Tencent and Alibaba. Its open-source, lower-cost models have already pushed several Chinese tech companies to cut prices 5.
