Telegram loses India appeal over temporary exam ban
A New Delhi court on June 19 rejected Telegram’s challenge to a temporary ban in India, a setback for the messaging app ahead of Sunday’s re-test for the national undergraduate medical entrance exam.
Telegram will remain blocked until June 22 after India’s information technology ministry said channels on the app were claiming to sell questions from the upcoming exam.
The move followed authorities’ cancellation of the previous exam’s results amid allegations that the paper had leaked in advance.
The court said the blocking orders were properly reasoned and followed legal procedure.
The ban was announced this week and implemented within hours by telecom companies, while Google and Apple removed Telegram from their app stores.
Telegram said it had removed more than 900 links tied to unlawful exam-related content. India is Telegram’s biggest market, with more than 150 million users.
