Synopsys to halt new releases for chip tools, sources say
Synopsys, a US chip design software company, plans to stop releasing new versions of some chip manufacturing analytics tools, according to six sources.
The tools are used by Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, Kioxia Holdings, and Qorvo, which will continue to receive maintenance support instead.
The affected products include Equipment Engineering System and Fault Detection and Classification tools.
Synopsys said the software monitors equipment health, identifies root causes, and helps engineers diagnose faults in real time.
The tools also help detect anomalies before they lead to defects.
Sources said Synopsys notified more than 10 chipmakers of the changes in April and May and aims to complete maintenance support agreements with each customer by July.
The company has also laid off a few dozen employees as it shifts resources toward higher-margin offerings, including AI design.
Synopsys said it is discontinuing some legacy manufacturing analytics products and will honor existing contracts.
Samsung said it has compatible alternatives and expects no negative impact on production.
The move appears limited in financial scope. Synopsys lists manufacturing analytics within a broader manufacturing portfolio and does not separately disclose manufacturing software revenue in its results.
