Stc’s Tali Ventures leads $6m Series A in Saudi AI platform Bonat

Bonat, a customer engagement platform based in Saudi Arabia, has raised US$6 million in a series A round led by Tali Ventures, the corporate venture arm of stc group.

Other investors include anb seed fund, Rua Growth Fund, RZM Investments, and several angel investors.

Bonat plans to use the funding to develop new AI features, launch personalized campaign automation, and expand its services within Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC.

Founded in 2019, Bonat uses AI-driven analytics and ad automation for retailers and F&B brands across Saudi Arabia, with integrations for digital wallets.

The company currently connects with over 6 million users and supports thousands of merchants.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Bonat’s defensibility hinges on unnamed POS and payment integrations

  • The article mentions “integrations for digital wallets” but skips partner names. In Saudi retail, live links to Foodics and Geidea or Tap Payments or stc pay would speed merchant onboarding, while manual integration slows it.
  • There is no proof of flagship enterprise customers or co-selling with stc (Saudi Arabia’s incumbent telecom operator whose venture arm led this round). That gap blurs traction versus pilot work. It also leaves the 6 million users hard to read, either steady transaction-led use or one-off installs with weak retention.

Saudi Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) enforcement creates urgent demand for marketing consent infrastructure

  • Saudi Arabia’s Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) took full effect in September 2024 and requires consent for direct marketing 1. Proposed amendments would remove the prior-interaction exemption for advertising 2. Retailers using AI campaign tools need consent capture, first-party data flows, and audit logs to avoid fines up to 5 million Saudi riyals (SAR) 1.
  • This opens work for marketing agencies, IT system integrators, Customer Data Platform (CDP) vendors, and cloud providers across Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) retail. Final wording on consent is pending, with a public consultation that ran until 27 May 2025 2, while Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) enforcement focus will steer 2025 launch timing.
