Starlink rival Eutelsat’s Q1 falls on weak video sales
French satellite operator Eutelsat reported Q1 revenue of 283 million euros (US$330 million), missing analyst expectations due to a drop in video sales.
The company owns OneWeb, which operates over 600 low Earth orbit satellites and is the only other LEO broadband provider besides Starlink.
Video revenue, which makes up 47% of Eutelsat’s total, fell 10.5% year-on-year, affected by a shrinking market and sanctions on Russian channels.
CFO Christophe Caudrelier said satellite connectivity demand is rising quickly, while Starlink shows strong progress in broadband and consumer markets.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
OneWeb Gen‑2 economics remain unclear as Eutelsat shifts to connectivity
- Eutelsat’s video revenue fell 10.5%, sanctions will cut about €16 million this year, and it did not break out connectivity growth. The 2022 Eutelsat–OneWeb plan projected low double‑digit revenue growth with mid‑teen Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization (EBITDA). Filings still lack OneWeb metrics to gauge progress 1.
- Gen‑2 targets early 2028 with five times Gen‑1 capacity and under 100 milliseconds (ms) latency, but funding beyond the €1.5 billion injection from France plus Britain remains unclear 2. The plan set €725–875 million in annual capital expenditures (capex) through fiscal years 2029–2030 and aimed to cut net debt‑to‑EBITDA from 4x to 3x. Investors still lack a satellite count and a launch schedule. They also need a user terminal (customer equipment) roadmap and pricing to judge if non‑video growth can offset video’s decline 12.
ISPs and systems integrators can tap LEO demand through OneWeb reseller partnerships
- Rising demand for Starlink alternatives lets internet and managed service providers (ISPs and MSPs) resell OneWeb for enterprise and maritime users. AST Networks, a satellite communications provider with roughly 30 years in maritime and remote land markets, works with OneWeb on pole‑to‑pole service that reaches northern latitudes above 60° 34. Clarus Networks 5 and E‑Sat 34 are distribution partners in Europe. Current distributors leave gaps in underserved regions plus enterprise IT, so new partners can move in before Gen‑2 service expected in early 2028 lifts capacity 342.
