Indian spacetech firm GalaxEye launches first satellite
Bengaluru-based spacetech startup GalaxEye launched its first Earth observation satellite, Mission Drishti, on May 3 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Vandenberg, California.
The 190 kg satellite combines electro-optical and synthetic aperture radar sensors on one platform, allowing imaging at night and in varying weather conditions.
Founded in 2021 by IIT Madras alumni, GalaxEye plans to build a constellation of about 10 OptoSAR satellites over the next few years to target domestic and global geospatial intelligence markets.
The company expects about 70% of revenue from defense and 30% from commercial customers. It has raised US$18.8 million from investors including Infosys, Rainmatter, Speciale Invest, and Mela Ventures, and partnered with NewSpace India Limited to distribute its imagery globally.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
A defense-led plan supports GalaxEye’s quick route to sales
- The “coming weeks” timing for data delivery fits the company’s plan to start commercial sales within eight weeks 1.
- Early demand from defense customers anchors that push, with the company expecting them to bring in most of its first revenue 1.
- That approach fits a wider export push among Indian defense groups. Hindustan Aeronautics, an Indian aerospace and defense manufacturer, has said it wants export revenue to rise from about 1% to 25% of total revenue 2.
Private startups are taking a larger role in India’s strategic technology base
- GalaxEye expects 70% of revenue from defense, which signals strong demand in its sales plan. That alone does not prove India is shifting defense buying away from state-owned enterprises 2.
- Its model suggests private capital, including the roughly US$18.8 million GalaxEye has raised, can back space technology with national-security uses alongside government-led programs.
- The eight-week span from launch to planned sales is an ambitious target. The cited source does not establish it as a new benchmark for India’s private space sector 1.
