SpaceX employees vote to create new city called Starbase

SpaceX employees in Boca Chica, Texas, voted to incorporate their community as a new city called Starbase. The decision, approved by 97.7% of voters, allows the area to implement city ordinances.

The vote took place on May 3, with 283 eligible voters, mostly SpaceX employees and their families.

Bobby Peden, a senior SpaceX executive, was elected unopposed as the city’s mayor.

Starbase, located near the Gulf of Mexico, is closely linked to SpaceX operations. Over half of its population of about 500 are SpaceX employees.

The incorporation is expected to improve logistics, especially managing road closures during rocket launches.

However, local groups like the South Texas Environmental Justice Network oppose the move, fearing it could limit public access to Boca Chica Beach, which holds historical significance.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Company towns: from industrial control to modern tech governance

Starbase joins a long American tradition of company towns that dates back to the Industrial Revolution, though with distinctly 21st century characteristics.

Historical company towns like Pullman, Illinois (1880) and Hershey, Pennsylvania (1903) were similarly created to house workers and centralize company operations, often with the founder’s vision deeply embedded in their design 1.

Like George Pullman, who faced a major strike in 1894 when his workers revolted against high rents and wage cuts, Musk’s SpaceX now confronts questions about corporate control over civic spaces 2.

The key difference is scale and density. While industrial-era company towns like Lynch, Kentucky once housed 10,000 coal workers, Starbase currently has just 500 residents, 260 of whom work for SpaceX 1.

This reflects a shift from mass industrial employment to specialized tech work, though the fundamental power dynamic—a single corporation dominating local governance and economy—remains similar despite a century of labor reforms.

2️⃣ The tension between corporate control and public access in privatized governance

Starbase’s incorporation reveals ongoing conflicts between corporate interests and public rights that have characterized company towns throughout history.
