South Korea ramps up investment in biological big data: report
South Korea has increased its investment in the biological big data sector nearly 4x from 2020 to 2024, according to a report by the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology.
Government spending reached 49.1 billion won (US$33.3 million) in 2024, up from 13.6 billion won (US$9.2 million) in 2020.
The rise follows the launch of a national project to build a biological data bank from 1 million people by 2032 to support precision medicine and industrial innovation.
The planned data bank will serve as research and development infrastructure for clinical information, genomic data, public data, and personal health information.
The report noted that other countries are also increasing investment in this area.
