South Korea plans to build hyperscale AI data centers

South Korea plans to develop hyperscale AI data centers in regions with abundant power sources.

The country aims to become one of the world’s top three AI powerhouses, standing shoulder to shoulder with the US and China.

Vice Chairman Im Moon-young of the National AI Strategy Committee outlined strategies to achieve 95% performance of state-of-the-art AI systems and maintain technological sovereignty.

The plan emphasizes building large-scale centers near power hubs and smaller edge facilities in the capital area, where demand is concentrated.

Im also highlighted efforts to reduce inter-ministerial barriers and foster data trading, including a system to use data first and provide compensation afterward.

The government said cooperation with the United Arab Emirates has expanded to include space-related projects.

South Korea plans to finalize its “Korea AI Action Plan” with 99 tasks and 326 recommendations, covering personal information, copyright, and security issues.

The government will hold a plenary meeting on February 25 to finalize the plan.

Private capital is already building South Korea’s AI future

  • The government’s push to build hyperscale AI data centers near strong power supply is already pulling in private funding. Princeton Digital Group has committed $700 million for an initial 48 MW site, within a broader plan for 500 MW of AI-focused capacity 1.
  • The public track includes a $475.8 billion semiconductor investment blueprint to build 10 new semiconductor fabrication plants (fabs) by 2047. The plan also moves toward producing AI processors 2.
  • Costs run high across the region. Microsoft has committed $2.9 billion to develop AI data centres in Japan by 2025 3.
