US software firm GitLab to cut jobs for AI agents
GitLab, a US software company that sells tools for software development, said it will cut jobs, trim management layers, and reduce the number of countries it operates in as it shifts spending toward AI agents, according to a May 12 memo from CEO Bill Staples.
GitLab will reorganize its research and development teams and use AI agents to automate reviews, approvals, and handoffs, said Staples.
The company has not yet decided how many roles will be affected and plans to give an update on June 2 when it reports quarterly earnings, said Staples.
GitLab also reaffirmed its guidance for the quarter and fiscal 2027, while its shares fell more than 8% in after-hours trading.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Slowing growth is pushing GitLab toward AI
- GitLab expects fiscal 2027 revenue growth of 15% to 17%, down from 26% in fiscal 2026 1.
- Management has said this outlook falls short. The company laid out five priorities to speed growth back up, including expanding sales capacity and rebuilding first orders 1.
- The restructuring is meant to free up resources for AI and other areas 2.
- That pressure adds context to the AI move. Management said AI is not expected to bring meaningful revenue in fiscal 2027 while GitLab turns pilot projects into production deployments 1.
GitLab’s restructuring sketches an AI-era operating model
- GitLab is flattening management and regrouping research and development into about 60 smaller, more independent teams. It is using that setup to test an operating model for what it calls the “agentic era” of AI 2.
- That structure may spread across software as AI agents cut the need for middle managers to coordinate work and approvals.
- For investors, putting most savings back into growth and AI infrastructure instead of near-term profit signals a long bet on faster expansion 2.
- That plan, along with a US$400 million share buyback authorization, suggests management sees the stock as undervalued during this costly push for growth 1.
