SK hynix to supply Dell with new AI computer drives

South Korea’s SK hynix has developed a new high-capacity drive for AI computers and will begin supplying Dell Technologies in April as its first global IT enterprise partner.

The memory chipmaker is offering the drive in 1TB and 2TB versions and said it uses SLC caching to speed up read and write performance.

QLC stores four bits per cell, which raises capacity vs. TLC chips that store three bits and still dominate the market.

Global market firm IDC expects QLC NAND to make up 61% of the global PC and notebook SSD market by 2027, up from 22% last year.

  • Solidigm is working on future products such as a planned 245TB SSD using floating-gate NAND, which stores data by trapping electrical charge in a conductive layer; it also lists charge-trap NAND, which traps charge in an insulating layer, for other products in its portfolio 3.
  • Together, the two groups can explore more than one NAND design while targeting the same end market, replacing nearline hard drives, high-capacity disks used for data that does not need the fastest access speeds, in AI infrastructure 1.
