SK hynix jumps 15% after Samsung’s strong Q1 forecast
SK hynix rose 15% in Seoul on April 8 after Samsung Electronics forecast Q1 operating profit above estimates, fueling expectations about SK hynix’s results.
Samsung said its Q1 operating profit would jump more than eightfold and beat analyst estimates as demand for AI infrastructure tightened supply and pushed chip prices higher.
Korea Investment & Securities raised its full-year operating profit estimate for SK hynix by 28%, citing stronger DRAM and NAND price rises. SK hynix is due to report January to March earnings later this month.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The numbers behind the AI memory super-cycle are staggering
- SK Hynix shares have climbed as the company charges more for memory chips amid the AI infrastructure boom 1.
- In the first quarter of 2026, fixed contract prices for DRAM, a widely used type of computer memory, rose 39.8%, while NAND flash, a type of storage chip used in devices and data centers, jumped 208.8% 1.
- Analysts now expect a record quarterly operating profit for SK Hynix, with some forecasts near 40 trillion won (US$26.8 billion), well above the recent brokerage consensus 1.
- The profit lift stems from Big Tech spending on AI infrastructure, now estimated above 1,000 trillion won (US$670 billion) a year 1.
The AI boom is forcing a shift toward U.S. capital and tighter supply plans
- Rising AI orders are pushing SK Hynix to line up funding for investment that supports demand for advanced memory chips 2.
- SK Hynix is working on a U.S. listing of American depositary receipts, a way for foreign companies to have shares trade in the U.S.; separate media reports have suggested it could raise around US$10 billion, while other reporting has cited up to US$14 billion 2.
- Unlike earlier upswings, memory chip suppliers are moving carefully on new capacity to avoid a boom-bust cycle; one commentary called this “strategically managed scarcity” 3.
- That restraint could keep memory chip prices elevated longer than in past cycles, raising costs across the tech hardware industry 3.
