Singtel pilots first 50Gbps fibre broadband

Singtel has launched a technical trial for 50Gbps XGS-PON fibre broadband, making it the first company in Singapore to pilot this technology.

The trial aims to test network performance for data-heavy applications such as cloud gaming, mixed reality, and AI-powered smart home devices.

Singtel said the 50Gbps broadband is designed to support simultaneous use of multiple devices and emerging digital services expected to grow over the next few years.

The company will use the trial to evaluate how its network can handle increased bandwidth demand from households and businesses.

The company previously deployed nationwide standalone 5G in 2022, and has rolled out other network advancements in recent years.

Singtel’s trial targets 50Gbps PON. Nokia and Google Fiber ran the first U.S. 50G-PON pilot 1. The Singapore announcement does not say if it uses International Telecommunication Union – Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) 50G-PON or name vendors.
It tests network performance for data-heavy uses. Launch timing also relies on steps under Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) frameworks and on NetLink Trust’s infrastructure roadmap. NetLink Trust is Singapore’s nationwide fibre network operator. The announcement does not cover these items.
There is no clarity on equipment vendors or on regulatory approvals. The effort looks like a lab trial, similar to Singtel’s 5G standalone pilot for enterprises in 2020 2, which came almost two years before the commercial 5G rollout.
