Shutterstock-owned Envato to cut up to 200 jobs for AI push
Envato, a creative marketplace acquired by Shutterstock in 2024 for US$245 million, was reported by Mumbrella to cut up to 200 jobs, about a third of its headcount.
Hichame Assi, CEO, notified staff via email that the restructure will include redundancies, redeployments, role changes, promotions, and reporting line changes across teams in Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and the US.
He said a focus on AI was one of the reasons behind the restructure.
The company plans to reduce operational costs to invest further in product, marketing, and AI.
Envato cut about 100 roles in mid-2022 and its headcount has since grown back to roughly 600 people.

Shutterstock bought Envato for its subscription engine
- Shutterstock acquired Envato mainly for Elements, a subscription service that offers unlimited downloads of creative assets 1.
- Envato said it reached 650,000 subscribers. Shutterstock’s CEO cited demand for an unlimited multi-asset subscription and Envato’s library, including videos, audio, graphics, fonts and templates, as reasons for the deal 1.
- Envato linked the restructure to AI work. Acquisitions also often bring job cuts that remove duplicate roles and lower operating costs.
AI helps frame post-merger cuts
- Envato said AI was one reason for the restructure. The changes include redundancies, redeployments, role changes, promotions, and reporting line shifts across teams in Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and the US.
- The company also said it will cut operating costs to fund more work in product, marketing, and AI.
- The decision lands during broader AI-linked layoffs at other firms, including WiseTech, Block which directly cited AI, and Commonwealth Bank.
