SG data center firm DayOne to invest $7b in Malaysia

DayOne Data Centers, a Singapore-based hyperscale data center operator, said it will commit more than RM28 billion (US$7 billion) in cumulative investment in Malaysia by end-2026, and expand hiring through its facilities and support functions.

The company said Malaysia will make up over half of its headcount growth in 2026 as it works toward 1,200 direct jobs in the country.

DayOne added that it expects the expansion to support more than 5,000 jobs across its supply chain, including over 200 roles from a phase II expansion of its Global Shared Services Center in Kuala Lumpur.

It also said its Regional Operations and Training Hub in Johor will train more than 1,000 data center engineers.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Malaysia plays a central role in a wider Asia-Pacific and Europe buildout

  • DayOne’s Malaysia spending follows its regional “SIJORI” strategy, which connects Singapore’s connectivity with Johor’s land and resources 1.
  • DayOne plans 390 megawatts of capacity across campuses in Johor, which puts Malaysia at the center of its footprint rather than a side market 2.
  • By end-2026, cumulative investment is expected to top RM28 billion. DayOne has already put more than RM14 billion into Malaysia since 2022, plus it plans another RM67 billion over the next two years 3.
  • The budget draws on more than US$2 billion in Series C equity financing. It also follows US$1.9 billion in earlier equity rounds and an up to €1 billion mezzanine debt facility, a hybrid form of financing that sits between senior debt and equity 4.

DayOne is preparing to compete for AI-ready data center demand

  • DayOne plans to train more than 1,000 data center operations engineers in Johor, which supports staffing for AI-ready infrastructure 3.
  • Sovereign investors include the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA), Indonesia’s state-backed investment fund. DayOne describes INA as its joint venture partner in Indonesia 4.
  • The strategy also opens the door to work with government agencies or electricity utilities to secure land, power, plus permits for capital-intensive builds 4.
  • DayOne is using prefabricated models and liquid-cooling–enabled designs to meet AI-driven requirements 4.
