Samsung to buy back $7.17b shares amid price decline
Samsung Electronics plans to repurchase shares valued at 10 trillion won (US$7.16 billion) over the next year.
The move aims to enhance shareholder value after a notable decrease in share price.
Within the next three months, Samsung will buy and cancel shares worth 3 trillion won (US$2.14 billion), which includes 50.14 million common shares and 6.91 million preferred shares.
The company’s board will decide later how to allocate the remaining seven trillion won.
Analysts suggest the buyback could boost Samsung’s share performance temporarily, but they emphasize the importance of strong business strategies for sustaining long-term value.
Recently, Samsung issued an apology for weaker profits and falling behind competitors in the AI chips sector.
Samsung also faces challenges such as potential tariffs under President-elect Donald Trump. These could affect the demand for electronics. Samsung’s shares rose 7.2% on Friday, marking the largest daily jump since March 2020. Despite this, shares are still down 32% for the year.
