Samsung NEXT, Sony-backed blockchain firm eyes Japan tokenized assets

Startale Group, a leader in blockchain infrastructure and Web3 innovation backed by Samsung NEXT, Sony Network Communications, and other major investors, is working with entertainment firm Twin Planet to develop entertainment tokenized assets (ETAs) in Japan.

The companies plan to use blockchain technology to bring entertainment rights and related cashflows onchain, making them more transparent and tradable.

Startale builds products for payments, digital identity, gaming, and entertainment, while Twin Planet manages talent and intellectual property in Japan’s entertainment industry.

The initiative aims to allow both institutional and retail participants to buy and trade ETAs under clear rules.

The project is also designed to give creators access to funding while offering fans direct exposure to the success of entertainment projects.

Details on the timing of the rollout and regulatory approval have not been disclosed.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Japan’s systematic approach builds on years of individual tokenization experiments

Startale’s Entertainment Tokenized Assets initiative represents a more systematic approach compared to earlier individual projects that have been testing entertainment tokenization since 2018.

Wesley Snipes launched a $25 million tokenized movie fund in 2019 through the Daywalker Movie Fund, allowing global investors to participate in his productions through security tokens1.

More recently, the film “Braid” successfully raised $1.4 million through tokenization on the Ethereum platform, demonstrating that individual projects can achieve meaningful funding through this model2.

What sets Japan’s approach apart is the focus on building comprehensive infrastructure and industry standards rather than one-off projects, potentially creating a more scalable foundation for the entire entertainment sector.

The partnership between Startale and Twin Planet suggests Japan is positioning itself to systematize what has been a fragmented series of experiments across different entertainment verticals globally.

2️⃣ Market timing aligns with massive projected growth in tokenized assets

Japan’s entry into entertainment tokenization comes as the broader tokenized asset market is projected to reach $24 trillion by 2027, according to Deloitte research2.
