Samsung SDI wins $6.7b EV battery deal with Mercedes
Samsung SDI signed a multiyear deal with Mercedes-Benz to supply high nickel EV batteries for the carmaker’s next-generation vehicles.
The company did not diclosed the value, but estimates put it at about 10 trillion won (US$6.7 billion), marking Samsung SDI’s first EV battery supply agreement with Mercedes-Benz.
The companies will expand work on future mobility and next-generation battery technology, while Samsung SDI said its Hungary plant will likely supply the batteries and denied speculation about a new factory in Europe.

Implications, context, and why it matters.
Samsung SDI’s Hungary plant handles several high-stakes partnerships
- A Mercedes-Benz supply deal raises the importance of Samsung SDI’s factory in Hungary 1.
- The site is being renovated through a roughly 1.1 billion euros (US$1.24 billion) share scheme to make sixth-generation (P6) prismatic batteries for a Hyundai and Kia contract from 2026 to 2032 2.
- Samsung SDI is also enlarging the plant to make 46-series cylindrical battery cells for BMW 3.
- The result is an important but demanding production base, with at least three automakers requiring different battery formats while political shifts in Hungary could lift costs 1.
The agreement supports Samsung SDI’s EV business during a market shift
- The Mercedes-Benz contract offers stability after Samsung SDI’s revenue fell in 2024 and the company recorded an operating loss in 2025 as EV demand softened 4.
- Outside China, the global EV battery market is expected to grow about 6% in 2026 4.
- Samsung SDI expects faster growth in batteries for energy storage systems (ESS), which store electricity for uses such as powering AI data centers 4.
- A long-term deal with Mercedes-Benz gives Samsung SDI steadier EV battery revenue as it expands into ESS and other industrial markets tied to AI infrastructure 4.
