RedDoorz opens its 100th Sans hotel in Bali

Hospitality and accommodation platform RedDoorz has opened its 100th Sans-branded hotel named Sans Vibes Hotel Seminyak, in Bali, Indonesia.

The company launched the Sans brand in 2020 to target travelers seeking affordable stays.

RedDoorz said Sans hotels have served over 1.3 million nights in 35 Indonesian cities since launch.

The new Bali property opens as the island reports a 20% year-on-year rise in foreign arrivals in 2024, reaching 6.3 million visitors, according to the Statistics Indonesia government agency.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Counter-cyclical hospitality expansion can pay off during tourism rebounds

RedDoorz’s decision to launch the SANS brand during the 2020 pandemic has proven strategically sound as Bali’s tourism surges back.

The company introduced SANS specifically during the downturn, when most hospitality operators were contracting, and has now reached 100 properties just as foreign tourist arrivals to Bali hit 6.3 million in 2024—a 20% year-over-year increase 1.

This timing allowed RedDoorz to secure properties and partnerships at potentially lower costs during the pandemic, while positioning for the current recovery when Indonesia’s international visitor spending is projected to reach USD 22.5 billion in 2025 2.

The 1.3 million stayed nights SANS has recorded across 35 cities demonstrates that launching during market lows, when done with sufficient capital reserves, can capture significant market share as conditions improve.

2️⃣ Bali’s tourism evolution reflects a 50-year shift from mass infrastructure to lifestyle-focused hospitality

Bali’s current focus on digital nomads and “quality tourism” represents a dramatic evolution from its tourism development origins in the 1970s.

The island’s modern tourism industry began with a World Bank-funded $16 million infrastructure project in 1974 that developed Nusa Dua, when visitor numbers surged from 300,000 in 1973 with over 50% annual growth 3.

Today’s approach emphasizes lifestyle-driven accommodation targeting remote workers and millennials, as seen in RedDoorz’s SANS brand positioning, rather than the mass tourism infrastructure model of earlier decades.

This shift aligns with Indonesia’s broader strategy toward “quality tourism” that aims to attract higher-value visitors, as the government moves away from purely volume-based metrics that characterized earlier tourism development phases 1.
