OpenAI said on July 10 that ChatGPT Work is a new agent in ChatGPT that can act across apps and files, complete multistep tasks such as slides and spreadsheets, and keep working independently for hours.

OpenAI said ChatGPT Work runs on GPT-5.6 and is part of a desktop app that combines Chat, Work, and Codex.

On desktop, Chat, Work, and Codex are rolling out on Mac and Windows to all users globally, including those on the Free tier.

On web and mobile, Work will begin rolling out to Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users, with Plus and Business users to follow in the next few days.

OpenAI is also adding a unified plugins directory for Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, calendars, customer relationship management tools, and other business apps.

GPT-5.6 was previously previewed as a three-model family.

OpenAI also offers a research-focused autonomous agent called Deep Research, but available materials do not show whether ChatGPT Work extends that system or is separate.

OpenAI had previously introduced a Codex app and macOS support for working with apps, suggesting continuity in its desktop product efforts.
