🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Legacy automakers are outpacing EV-only startups in India’s electric two-wheeler market
Ola’s struggles reflect a broader shift where traditional manufacturers are successfully competing against EV-focused companies.
TVS and Bajaj collectively captured 40% of India’s electric two-wheeler market in FY2025, up from 31% in FY2024, demonstrating how legacy players are integrating electric mobility into their core strategies1.
This pattern shows established automakers leveraging their existing dealer networks, manufacturing expertise, and brand recognition to compete effectively against EV startups.
The data reveals that traditional manufacturers like TVS and Bajaj are not just dabbling in electric vehicles—they’re making it a central part of their growth strategy, with Bajaj’s EV penetration jumping from 5.36% in FY2024 to 11.01% in FY20251.
Their success stems from dedicated experience centers, strategic product launches, and the ability to offer wider price ranges to cater to different consumer segments.
2️⃣ Supply chain resilience creates competitive advantages in volatile markets
While competitors face production cuts due to rare earth magnet shortages, Ola’s prior stockpiling strategy demonstrates how supply chain planning can become a competitive differentiator.
Bajaj Auto plans to halve its electric vehicle output and could see a “zero month” of EV production in August, while Ather Energy is reducing production by 8-10% due to the same shortages2.
