Ola Electric plans $217m stake sale in battery arm

Ola Electric launched a plan to raise up to 2,000 crore rupee (US$216.8 million) by selling a stake in its battery arm Ola Cell Technologies (OCT) as part of efforts to restructure operations and shore up its balance sheet, sources said.

OCT owned a Tamil Nadu lithium‑ion cell plant with 1.5 GWh of operational capacity and planned to scale to 6 GWh by the end of the financial year, sources said.

Investment banks Avendus and Motilal Oswal were mandated to run the fundraising process, sources said.

Sources said stake sales would help determine the market valuation of the gigafactory, which had not yet been ascertained, and had attracted inbound interest from financial investors, including some leading sovereign wealth funds.

The gigafactory was built with an upfront investment of 3,500 crore rupee (US$379.4 million) and aims to localize battery cell manufacturing in India while supporting energy storage beyond two‑wheelers.

Ola’s Battery Innovation Centre, a part of OCT, houses over 200 executives drawn from global corporations and has built a portfolio of close to 400 patents across multiple chemistries and cell formats.

Ola has developed dry electrode manufacturing technology and the 4680‑format Bharat Cell is now being commercially manufactured at the gigafactory and has been deployed in Ola Electric vehicles for more than six months.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

This fundraising expands a modular energy platform beyond manufacturing capacity

  • The fundraising supports scaling Ola Cell Technologies (OCT) lithium‑ion cell production and related products. This includes the 4680‑format Bharat Cell, which Ola says is now commercially manufactured at its Tamil Nadu gigafactory and has been deployed in Ola Electric vehicles for more than six months.
  • OCT also includes Ola’s Battery Innovation Centre. It employs over 200 executives hired from global corporations and has built a portfolio of close to 400 patents across multiple battery chemistries and cell formats.
  • The stake sale could help set a market valuation for the gigafactory. Sources said the valuation has not yet been set, and the asset has drawn interest from financial investors, including some leading sovereign wealth funds.

Ola’s battery push seeks a wider role in energy platforms and infrastructure

  • Work on the 4680 Bharat Cell platform and dry electrode manufacturing technology positions OCT to supply more than Ola’s own two‑wheeler business.
  • Ola has said the gigafactory targets battery cell production in India and supports energy storage beyond two‑wheelers. The plan points to a longer‑term push to supply or enable a broader range of energy storage products.
  • The proposed fundraising of up to Rs 2,000 crore aligns with a wider effort, according to sources, to restructure operations and strengthen the balance sheet.
