Oklo, X-energy join US nuclear push for AI

Oklo and X-energy are set to join Microsoft and Nvidia in a Trump administration program that could be announced as soon as July 22 at a US Department of Energy (DOE) summit to speed development of power plants for AI data centers, according to a document.

Oklo, a US advanced nuclear reactor developer, and X-energy, a US nuclear reactor and fuel company, would join a US$200 million effort that also includes US$60 million over three years for DOE national laboratories and institutions including the University of Texas at Austin, the document said.

The move reflects pressure from rising electricity demand linked to AI.

DOE has said data centers will need clean firm power, including existing and next-generation nuclear, while its public benchmark is 200 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity by 2050.

Advanced reactors are still at an early commercial stage. X-energy and Dow filed a Nuclear Regulatory Commission construction license application in March 2025, while Oklo is targeting its first Aurora unit by early 2028.

Microsoft has already signed a 20-year nuclear power purchase agreement with Constellation tied to the restart of Three Mile Island Unit 1, while DOE has cut its reactor authorization process from 17 to 11 steps for advanced reactor testing.
