Nvidia unveils ‘first open foundation model for humanoid robots’

Nvidia has introduced a new humanoid robot model, which its senior research manager claimed as “the world’s first open foundation model for humanoid robots.”

“We are on a mission to democratize physical AI,” said Jim Fan on his LinkedIn post on Wednesday morning Singapore time.

Named GR00T N1, it uses a neural network that translates visual input into motor actions. Additionally, it features a Diffusion Transformer that executes motor actions at a frequency of 120 Hz.

The model has been trained on data from humanoid teleoperation, large-scale simulations, and synthetic trajectories generated by advanced video models.

It reportedly achieves up to a 30% improvement in manipulation tasks for both household and industrial applications.

Additionally, GR00T N1 supports cross-embodiment, which is shown by its adaptation to the HuggingFace LeRobot SO100 robot arm.

The initiative includes the open-sourcing of over 300,000 simulated trajectories to support research and development in robotics.
