Nvidia launches AI models for quantum error correction

On World Quantum Day, Nvidia announced Nvidia Ising, a set of open AI models for quantum processor calibration and quantum error correction.

Nvidia said Ising can help tune quantum processors and decode errors faster than traditional methods, and the company cited gains of up to 2.5x in speed and 3x in accuracy.

CEO Jensen Huang said Nvidia sees AI as a control layer for future quantum systems that combine qubits with GPUs.

Nvidia is supplying the tools, not just the models

  • To narrow the performance gap in quantum computing, Ising uses a vision-language model (VLM), an AI model that can work with both visual and text-like information, for calibration. It also uses a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN), a type of AI model often used to analyze complex spatial patterns, for error decoding 1.
  • Nvidia says quantum computing companies and research labs such as IonQ, Atom Computing, and Sandia National Laboratories, a US government research lab, already use or deploy parts of the Ising family for calibration, decoding, or both 2.
  • Nvidia also offers open frameworks and “cookbooks” that help quantum computing teams apply AI without deep machine learning expertise 3.

The AI control plane is a strategy for complex systems beyond quantum

  • Nvidia calls AI a “control plane” for quantum machines and it ties to a wider plan for other complex industries 2.
  • Samsung has announced plans to build an “AI mega-factory” with Nvidia. It will use more than 50,000 Nvidia GPUs to optimize manufacturing in real time 4.
