Nvidia chooses China’s Hesai for lidar in self-driving platform
Nvidia has selected Hesai Group, a Shanghai-based lidar sensor maker, to supply sensors for its Drive Hyperion autonomous driving platform targeting level 4 (L4) self-driving capabilities.
Hesai, which counts Li Auto and Geely among its clients, said the sensors are ready for mass production.
The company also said its first overseas plant in Bangkok will begin operations in early 2027.
Hesai plans to double annual production capacity to 4 million units by 2026 to meet growing demand.
Nvidia’s Drive Hyperion platform includes processors, a safety-certified operating system, and various sensor suites, including lidar.

Customer commitments hold back Hyperion’s rollout
- Nvidia picked Hesai of Shanghai to supply sensors for Drive Hyperion, an autonomous driving platform aimed at Level 4 (L4). Drive Hyperion packages processors and a safety-certified operating system with a full sensor suite that includes lidar (light detection and ranging) sensors that use lasers to map a car’s surroundings in 3D.
- Hesai says its sensors are ready for mass production and plans to double yearly capacity to 4 million units by 2026. A Bangkok plant is set to open in early 2027. Parts will be available, yet automaker production start dates and order volumes often lag.
- The company raised its 2025 profit outlook to 350 million to 450 million yuan (the low end equals about US$50 million). Revenue will arrive only when original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) fix volumes for vehicles built on platforms like Drive Hyperion.
China’s L3 greenlight boosts demand for validation vendors
- China cleared state-owned carmakers to mass produce Level 3 (L3) vehicles. L3 systems drive themselves in set conditions and still ask a human to take over when needed. That shift creates near-term demand for safety validation and simulation tooling. High-definition mapping from third-party providers will also see new orders.
- L3 features run in defined areas or conditions. Car brands will need fleet management software to monitor live operations. They will schedule sensor calibration more often as coverage grows.
- New L3 apps will create more work for data annotation. Vendors will label edge cases such as heavy rain, nighttime or road work to improve perception models.
