Nokia wins UK appeal over Acer, Asus patent suits
A UK appeals court blocked London lawsuits by Taiwanese electronics companies Acer and Asus against Nokia in a dispute over video coding patents, and a trial set for June and July will no longer proceed.
The Court of Appeal said Nokia had offered patent licenses on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms to be set by arbitration, so the London cases should not continue.
Acer and Asus had earlier won a High Court ruling for an interim license, while China-based TV maker Hisense settled a similar case before the appeal, and Nokia has filed related suits in the US, Brazil, Germany, and India.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Nokia’s licensing push reaches beyond this UK fight
- The dispute fits Nokia’s broader effort to earn more from its patent portfolio. The company says it has spent more than 150 billion euros (US$176 billion) on research and development since 2000 and holds about 26,000 patent families 1.
- The video coding patents cover tools used in digital media. Nokia says it helped build standards such as H.264/AVC and H.266/VVC, technical rules that compress video and send it efficiently 2.
- Nokia is taking this work beyond phones into other sectors. It says it signed a deal with Amazon for video technology used in streaming services and devices, a license agreement with Snap Inc., parent company of Snapchat, plus seven bilateral license agreements with video streaming companies 3, 4.
Arbitration’s growth may reshape tech patent fights worldwide
- A 2020 UK Supreme Court ruling made UK courts an influential place for patent licensing disputes because they can set global fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms 5.
- The ruling suggests UK courts may pause related cases when a patent owner offers arbitration to set FRAND terms 5. Arbitration is a private process for settling disputes 5.
- That precedent may give patent owners more leverage because an arbitration offer could sidestep long court battles 5.
- The impact could reach past consumer electronics into sectors where FRAND disputes arise, including automotive, Internet of Things (IoT), and video services 1.
