Netflix launches in-house AI animation studio

Netflix set up INKubator in March as an in-house studio for generative AI animation as it expands its use of AI in content production.

The unit is led by former DreamWorks Animation executive Serena Eager and is hiring producers, technical directors, software engineers, and CG artists.

Job listings show it will start with short animations and special video projects and could later expand into feature films.

The move comes as Netflix builds on recent animation successes such as KPop Demon Hunters and Swapped, reflecting a broader push to integrate AI into content production, while Hollywood continues to debate AI use in filmmaking.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Netflix is building AI animation shorts for Clips and kids shows

  • Netflix is making AI-generated shorts that could later appear in Clips, its vertical video feed. The company framed that as a possible use, not a confirmed plan 1.
  • The effort could help expand kids programming as Netflix tries to offer a kid-safe option to YouTube, which has a far larger supply of children’s videos 1.
  • Job posts describe a “creative-led, generative AI-native animation studio” built around generative AI workflows and artist tools. That suggests a longer-term buildout, not a one-off test 1.
  • The push also faces backlash. International animators protested generative AI at the 2025 Annecy Animation Film Festival in France 1.

AI studios could reshape short-form animation economics if the model works

  • Netflix’s in-house AI animation unit, INKubator, seems to be starting with animated shorts and special video projects through experimental generative AI-native production pipelines. Job posts suggest feature films could follow 1.
  • If costs fall, studios could afford high-quality animation for smaller audiences. That could widen the range of projects that get approved.
  • These new pipelines may also shift hiring toward roles that mix artistic direction with AI-enabled workflows 2.
