Microsoft, Premier League sign deal to power AI tools
Microsoft has formed a five-year partnership with the Premier League to deliver cloud computing services through its Azure platform.
The agreement, announced on July 1, 2025, will facilitate the migration of the league’s core technology infrastructure to Azure.
As part of the initiative, the Premier League’s digital platforms, including its mobile applications and website, will incorporate an AI-powered chatbot.
Microsoft’s AI technology will also be used to enhance the league’s fantasy games. The financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed.
This partnership reflects a broader trend in sports where technology companies are collaborating to demonstrate their services.
Microsoft’s Copilot brand sponsors Beyond Stats, an analytics service for Spain’s La Liga, while Amazon Web Services supports similar initiatives in Germany’s Bundesliga.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Sports tech partnerships evolve from sideline branding to core infrastructure
Microsoft’s Premier League deal represents a significant evolution in sports technology partnerships that extend far beyond traditional logo placement.
These partnerships now involve fundamental technology infrastructure transformations, as seen when SAP became City Football Group’s official Cloud Software Provider to enhance operations across their global clubs in 2015 1.
Similar comprehensive technology integrations include Cisco’s partnership with City Football Group to improve connectivity and operational efficiency 2 and Intel’s True View technology implementation at Emirates, Anfield, and Etihad stadiums to create immersive 3D replays 3.
The migration of “core technology infrastructure” to Azure represents a deeper integration than previous sports-tech partnerships, reflecting how digital transformation has become central to sports business operations rather than peripheral marketing.
2️⃣ AI adoption in sports reflects evolving fan expectations and behaviors
The Premier League’s implementation of AI chatbots aligns with rapidly changing fan preferences, as recent data shows 54% of sports fans now rely on AI for personalized content 4.
Fan expectations are shifting toward data-enriched experiences, with 64% wanting tailored updates and interactive elements during live events according to Capgemini research 4.
