Microsoft, Chile’s copper firm Codelco sign AI mining deal
Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer based in Chile, and Microsoft signed an 18-month memorandum of understanding in Santiago to explore using AI, advanced analytics, automation, and cybersecurity to improve operational efficiency, operational safety, and digital security in mining.
The deal, signed by Rubén Alvarado, Codelco CEO, and Tito Arciniega, Microsoft Latin America president, builds on more than 27 years of collaboration and sets a joint governance structure to monitor pilots, early testing, and initiatives.
Workstreams include intensive data use and AI for decision support, autonomous and safer operations, automation of critical processes, strengthened cyber defenses, and technological training programs for workers and teams.
Codelco said the agreement aims to optimize asset management and protect data under high cybersecurity standards, while Microsoft described AI as a tool to enable safer, more efficient, and sustainable operations focused on people and long-term value for business and the country.
