Meta ends US fact-checking on Apr. 7
Meta will end its US-based fact-checking operations on Apr. 7, according to Joel Kaplan, the company’s chief global affairs officer. This follows Meta’s January announcement to relax content moderation policies.
The company is shifting to a user-driven model similar to X’s Community Notes, where users can add context to posts without facing penalties.
Kaplan said this feature will gradually roll out across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
Critics worry the relaxed policies may boost the spread of misinformation. Some hoaxes, including a viral false claim about ICE payments, have already gained traction.
Meta’s algorithm, which favors content that triggers strong reactions, could amplify such posts.
