Meta CEO to testify in youth social media safety trial, judge rules
A Los Angeles judge has ordered Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to testify at the first trial over social media’s alleged harm to young users, set for January.
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel and Instagram head Adam Mosseri were also ordered to appear.
The case is among several lawsuits claiming social media firms designed platforms and features that negatively impact children’s mental health.
Judge Carolyn Kuhl said testimony from the CEOs is “uniquely relevant” to the claims that companies failed to warn about addictive features targeting minors.
Meta and Snap tried to prevent their executives from testifying, arguing that prior depositions and other witnesses were sufficient.
Earlier this month, New York City filed a similar lawsuit against multiple social platforms, and tech CEOs testified at a Senate hearing on child safety last January.
The court’s order does not address the validity of the plaintiffs’ claims.
