Mercedes-Benz to launch Nvidia-powered driving tech in S Korea

Mercedes-Benz plans to launch vehicles with Nvidia’s Alpamayo Level 2++ driving system in South Korea in 2027.

Mercedes will pair the system with its own software, allowing driving on highway and city roads while the driver remains attentive.

Mercedes has not decided if the Korean version will allow hands-free driving.

Mercedes also unveiled the all-new electric C Class and said it is expanding its electrified lineup in South Korea.

Mercedes has battery supply deals with Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Nvidia’s Alpamayo trains driving systems for cars

  • Alpamayo is not a ready-made system that runs inside a car 1.
  • It is a set of open AI models built to serve as a large-scale “teacher” 1.
  • Carmakers can fine-tune and distill smaller driving software from it for real-time use in vehicles 1.
  • The system targets the “long tail” of rare, complex road events that still limit safety and wider use 1.
  • Nvidia says opening the models could help partners adapt them faster across the auto industry 1.

Mercedes’ Korea launch leans on South Korean battery makers

  • The Seoul rollout also brings Mercedes’ ties with South Korean battery suppliers into view.
  • LG Energy Solution has an US$11 billion battery supply agreement with Mercedes-Benz for cylindrical 46 series cells 2.
  • Samsung SDI has expanded U.S. output for prismatic energy storage system batteries, including lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, as demand rises from renewable energy and the AI industry 3.
  • Samsung SDI says it is seen as the only non-Chinese maker of prismatic batteries now operating in the United States 3.
