LG Uplus builds AWS-linked platform for enterprise AI

South Korean telecom firm LG Uplus has built a platform to run AI models as services by linking its on-premises systems with cloud infrastructure.

The platform combines model training, evaluation, deployment, and operations in one workflow to cut handoff issues between development and service stages.

It uses Amazon EKS, AWS’s managed Kubernetes service, with LG Uplus’ on-premises GPU infrastructure connected as hybrid nodes.

LG Uplus is running the Kubernetes control plane as a managed AWS service lowered platform management work and helped reduce idle GPU time through more flexible resource allocation.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The platform runs specialized models supporting a sovereign cloud strategy

  • LG Uplus built the AI platform to run models such as ixi-Gen, a small language model tuned for financial tasks. LG Uplus said it launched ixi-Gen on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Bedrock marketplace, a catalog for AI models and services 1.
  • LG Uplus said ixi-Gen is based on LG’s large language model Exaone 1.
  • The hybrid setup sits within a strategic alliance between LG Uplus and AWS to build a “Korean-style sovereign cloud.” It refers to cloud services that keep control of data and operations inside South Korea 2.
  • The partners aim to meet South Korea’s legal and regulatory requirements by keeping data stored, processed, and managed within national borders 2.

Hybrid AI platforms signal a shift in enterprise IT control

  • LG Uplus’s architecture tracks a wider move to run generative AI nearer to where company data is created and business decisions are made. The shift ties to latency, data locality, and regulatory compliance needs 3.
  • Many companies want to use existing on-premises graphics processing unit (GPU) capacity while avoiding the work of running Kubernetes, software for coordinating containers, in their own data centers. Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) Hybrid Nodes connects on-premises infrastructure to the Amazon EKS control plane 3.
  • Amazon Web Services describes a similar setup in a post about Flawless, an AI company focused on film technology. The post says Amazon EKS Hybrid Nodes cut model training time from weeks to days 4.
  • The model can help regulated industries keep data locality and meet compliance requirements while still using managed cloud tooling plus observability services, which are tools for monitoring system performance and behavior 3.
