S. Korea plans $885m fund for materials tech, green transition
South Korea’s industry ministry announced plans to allocate 1.3 trillion won (US$884.5 million) in 2026 to fund projects focused on materials, parts, and equipment technologies, marking a 9.6% rise from last year.
The budget includes 470.6 billion won (US$323.07 million) for materials technology development in sectors such as semiconductors, displays, secondary batteries, and biohealth.
An additional 545.7 billion won (US$374.62 million) will support projects for the high-value transition of industries like machinery, automobiles, and chemicals, as well as green transition efforts.
It will also support 65 projects to strengthen supply chains, including developing copper for AI semiconductors and glass substrates for AI devices.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
This funding supports a multi-trillion won push for industrial strength and economic security
- The 1.3 trillion won budget fits within South Koreas 20262030 Basic Plan for Strengthening the Materials, Parts, and Equipment (MPE) Industry 1.
- The plan grew out of a 2019 shock when Japan tightened export controls on key industrial materials, which sped up South Koreas drive for technological independence 1.
- The government expects public money to pull in far more company spending, aiming for 30 trillion won (US$20.8 billion) in private materials, parts and equipment investment by 2030 2.
- The plan also focuses on on-the-ground capacity, including 10 more MPE Specialized Clusters by 2030 to grow manufacturing sites and strengthen ties between demand and supply firms such as large manufacturers and upstream suppliers 1.
Koreas materials drive supports the larger semiconductor mega-cluster effort
- The MPE funding lines up with the governments effort to build what it has called the worlds largest and most advanced mega semiconductor cluster, with 622 trillion won in investment planned by 2047 3.
- Projects include materials such as copper for AI semiconductors and glass substrates for AI devices, which the industry ministry plans to back as part of supply-chain work.
- The R&D budget sits alongside bigger financial tools, including the 18.1 trillion won (+b1) Semiconductor Financial Support Program announced in 2024 within a broader 26 trillion won package 4.
- The government is also using policy changes to speed progress, including longer tax credits and deregulation steps on labor rules plus some chemical safety rules described in the 2022 semiconductor strategy 5
