Kakao denies plan to sell its entertainment arm

Kakao has denied rumors about selling its subsidiary, Kakao Entertainment.

The South Korean internet firm had considered changes to Kakao Entertainment’s shareholder structure but has decided not to proceed.

Kakao issued the statement after ongoing speculation that it planned to sell management control and had reportedly informed shareholders, including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, about this possibility.

Kakao will continue to look at other strategic options for Kakao Entertainment, which operates in web content, music, and talent management.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Kakao’s M&A-driven growth strategy faces regulatory headwinds

Kakao’s decision to keep Kakao Entertainment reflects the challenges facing its acquisition-heavy expansion model.

The company has built an entertainment empire through aggressive M&A, completing 14 acquisitions averaging $546 million each and growing to 144 subsidiaries by 2023 12.

However, this strategy hit regulatory roadblocks when the Financial Supervisory Service referred Kakao executives for possible indictment over market manipulation related to the SM Entertainment acquisition 2.

The regulatory scrutiny has forced Kakao to shift from aggressive acquisitions toward what experts call “qualitative growth strategies” rather than purely expansion-focused deals 2.

This context makes retaining Kakao Entertainment strategically crucial, as selling a major subsidiary could signal retreat from the entertainment sector where Kakao has invested heavily since acquiring Loen Entertainment in 2016 3.

2️⃣ Global entertainment expansion requires massive capital commitments

Kakao Entertainment’s retention aligns with the enormous financial requirements for competing in global entertainment markets.

The subsidiary secured 1.2 trillion won from sovereign wealth funds in January 2023 specifically for global expansion across webtoons, media, and music 4.

This massive investment reflects the capital-intensive nature of building international entertainment platforms, especially as Kakao targets 30% overseas revenue by 2025 2.
