JD.com founder launches yacht brand

Richard Liu, founder of Chinese ecommerce giant JD.com, has launched a new yacht brand called Sea Expandary, focusing on producing environmentally friendly yachts.

Liu announced a 5 billion yuan (US$726 million) investment at a signing event, aiming to compete with global yacht makers.

He clarified he will not be involved in daily operations and will continue to focus on JD.com.

Sea Expandary plans to establish a manufacturing base in Zhuhai and its headquarters in Shenzhen, where it also intends to develop marinas.

The company has signed cooperation agreements with local governments in Shenzhen and Zhuhai.

China’s yacht fleet has nearly doubled in three years, reaching close to 10,000 vessels, according to transport ministry data.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The affordable yacht paradox behind a billionaire’s new venture

  • Sea Expandary plans to build environmentally friendly yachts that are “affordable for ordinary households” 1.
  • The company also promises “100% green” technology, which sets it apart from the usual luxury yacht market 2.
  • Richard Liu says he will not handle day-to-day work, which differs from his past role at JD.com where he held 15.5% of equity yet controlled 79.5% of the voting shares in 2018 3.
  • The effort contrasts with Liu’s childhood in a poor village without electricity before he founded the e-commerce company JD.com 4.

A blueprint for hard tech expansion

  • The move suggests a path for Chinese tech founders shifting into capital-intensive “hard tech” industries, such as manufacturing businesses that require large upfront investment in factories, equipment, and product engineering.
  • Sea Expandary expects to cover research and development (R&D), manufacturing, plus sales, which could draw on the supply chain and logistics know-how linked to JD.com’s model 4, 1.
  • JD.com has also built a wide logistics network and put money into automation and robotics, which matches the shift toward advanced manufacturing beyond e-commerce 4.
  • Cooperation agreements with the Shenzhen and Zhuhai governments tie the project to regional industrial goals through a public-private development effort 2.
