Japan’s SMBC leads $24m round for Philippine ecommerce enabler
Etaily, a digital-native retail platform in the Philippines, has raised new funding led by Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), bringing its total funding to over US$24 million.
Other investors include Kaya Founders, JGDEV of the Gokongwei Group, and several Asia-based family offices.
Etaily manages ecommerce operations for more than 80 consumer brands in Southeast Asia, including Levi’s, Skechers, and L’Oreal, and said gross sales doubled in the past year.
The company also announced a partnership with WPP Media to address social commerce needs in the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Founded in 2020 by Alexander Friedhoff, Etaily has processed over 40 million orders on platforms like Lazada, Shopee, and TikTok Shop.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Revenue growth without visibility into profitability metrics
- Esquire puts Etaily’s growth at 13,086% from 2020 to 2023, with revenue rising from $22 million to $29.03 billion 1. That is a top-line figure, not profit or cash kept.
- That distinction matters for ecommerce enablers that run online stores for brands. They earn through take rates (the percentage of gross merchandise value (GMV) they keep) and service fees. Without disclosed take rates or clear revenue definitions, headline numbers may overstate the economics.
- CEO Alexander Friedhoff stresses “cash flow and profitability” 1. The Financial Times (FT)/Statista list uses revenue growth 2 and does not share profit margins or burn rates (the pace at which a company spends cash). Investors lack clarity on whether Etaily’s 121-person team 1 runs on steady cash or needs ongoing funding.
Tech service providers can capture TikTok Shop demand by filling integration gaps
- Etaily and WPP partnered in the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore. That signals rising social commerce demand that SaaS tools, digital agencies, and third-party logistics firms can tap.
- Firms that offer inventory tools, creator relationship software, or cross-border fulfillment should review TikTok Shop’s official partner directory. Find underserved categories and markets, then apply as a certified service provider to serve merchant needs.
- The company has processed over 40 million orders across Lazada, Shopee, and TikTok Shop. Vendors that build multi platform integration APIs can stand out by reducing the complexity brands face when running multiple storefronts.
