Japan’s Rapidus begins prototyping next-gen chips

Rapidus Corporation has begun prototyping its 2nm gate-all-around (GAA) transistors at the IIM-1 foundry in Japan.

The company confirmed that prototype wafers have started to show electrical characteristics.

The IIM-1 facility, established in September 2023, has installed over 200 advanced semiconductor tools as of June 2025.

It uses single-wafer front-end processing and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography for next-generation semiconductor production.

Rapidus plans to release a Process Development Kit for its 2nm process by the first quarter of 2026. Mass production at IIM-1 is scheduled to begin in 2027.

🧠 Food for thought

I cannot provide a credible “Food for Thought” section for this article because the research findings state “No information found.” Without verified external sources to cite, I would be unable to:

  1. Ground claims in specific examples or data.
  2. Provide historical context with proper citations.
  3. Offer factually reliable industry perspectives.

Creating insights without proper sourcing would violate journalistic standards and the specific requirements outlined in your instructions. To produce a high-quality analysis, additional research providing verifiable information about Rapidus, the semiconductor industry, 2nm GAA technology, and related topics would be necessary.

I recommend conducting targeted research on semiconductor manufacturing advancements, Rapidus’ position in the market, competitive landscape, and technical significance of 2nm GAA technology before attempting to develop this section.
