Japan’s Metaplanet makes largest bitcoin purchase at $632.5m
Metaplanet, a Japanese firm that holds bitcoin as a corporate treasury asset, has purchased 5,419 BTC for about US$632.5 million, marking its largest bitcoin acquisition so far.
CEO Simon Gerovich said on X that the company paid an average of roughly US$116,724 per bitcoin.
This purchase brings Metaplanet’s total holdings to 25,555 BTC, bought for about US$2.7 billion at an average price of US$106,065 per bitcoin.
Data from The Block suggests Metaplanet is likely now the fifth-largest public corporate bitcoin holder, ahead of Bullish and behind Strategy, Mara, XXI, and Bitcoin Standard Treasury Company.
Earlier in September, Metaplanet announced plans to raise US$1.4 billion by issuing 385 million new shares to fund further bitcoin purchases.
Its board recently approved a new US subsidiary, Metaplanet Income Corp., to focus on bitcoin income generation, including derivatives and related activities.
Metaplanet’s shares fell 0.5% on September 22 in Japan, while US-traded shares closed up 3.8% at US$4.09 on September 19.
