Japan’s JX Metals boosts investment on AI chip demand
JX Advanced Metals, a metals and chip materials company, said it will lift annual spending across its businesses to about 100 billion yen (US$623 million), up from an average of 90 billion yen (US$563.18 million) over the past three years, as it prioritises chip and IT materials amid rising semiconductor demand.
President Yoichi Hayashi said the shift is driven by demand linked to AI data centre buildouts, with customers including TSMC, SK Hynix, and Intel, as the company moves beyond its traditional copper smelting business.
JX also raised its operating profit forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, citing stronger-than-expected demand, and said it plans additional capacity investment for materials used in data centres.
The company is also negotiating price increases with customers as supply remains tight.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
JX spending increase signals its place in the semiconductor supply chain
- JX Advanced Metals says it has the world’s No.1* share in sputtering targets for semiconductors, which form fine wiring inside logic and memory chips 1.
- The company sells these materials to leading chipmakers. It also says global manufacturers such as Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) have given it multiple excellent supplier awards 1.
- JX Advanced Metals says long-running ties with semiconductor equipment manufacturers, the firms that build chipmaking tools, help move its products into mass production sooner than rivals 1.
- Outside targets, it is one of the few global makers of indium phosphide (InP) substrates used in optical communications. The company has said demand is rising as generative AI spurs hyperscale data center buildouts 2.
JX spending increase puts more weight on chip materials in the race
- Higher spending fits JX Advanced Metals’ push toward chip and IT materials as semiconductor demand climbs, including demand tied to AI data center buildouts.
- Reports say JX Advanced Metals is considering investing about ¥5 billion in Rapidus, Japan’s government-backed chip foundry, and could supply materials to it 3.
- JX Advanced Metals plans to expand output of indium phosphide substrates, crystalline materials used in optical communications equipment 3.
- JX says InP substrates may also enter photonic-electronic convergence technologies that could cut energy use versus conventional electrical circuits if realized 2.
- JX expects growth in AI server shipments to lift demand for high-speed, high-capacity data transmission, which it says should raise demand for its materials such as InP substrates 1.
