Japan tech earnings jump on AI demand in data centers
Japan’s tech companies beat analyst expectations in the latest earnings season, with AI boosting demand for data centers and chips.
More than 75% of firms in the MSCI Japan Information Technology Index exceeded forecasts, and overall profit rose 35%, according to Bloomberg data.
Advantest, a major chip testing equipment maker, raised its full-year operating profit forecast by 25% to ¥374 billion (US$2.4 billion) as sales of high-bandwidth memory chip testers increased.
Tokyo Electron, a top supplier of chip production gear, also raised its profit outlook, citing strong demand from DRAM and NAND chipmakers.
Government support continues, with Japan allocating about ¥5.7 trillion (US$36.9 billion) since 2021 to revive its chip industry.
However, chip suppliers for automotive and industrial sectors reported weaker results.
Renesas Electronics posted its steepest share drop in four months after indicating slow recovery, while Rohm and Resonac Holdings also reported disappointing earnings due to sluggish auto market demand.

AI chip demand drives Japanese equipment makers, but durability is uncertain
- Spending on 300mm fab equipment, tools for 300mm or 12-inch wafer fabs, reaches $107 billion in 2025 1. It rises to $116 billion in 2026, $120 billion in 2027, and $138 billion in 2028 1.
- Through 2028, Memory segment 300mm fab outlays total $136 billion with $79 billion for DRAM (dynamic random-access memory) and $56 billion for NAND (flash storage) 1. - EdgeConneX plans a 350 MW platform in Greater Osaka 2. NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, a telecom and data center operator) plans the 36 MW Osaka North 1 campus in Ibaraki, with phases in 2027–2028 3. MW refers to megawatts.
- Osaka projects can secure power in 3–5 years. Tokyo needs 8–10 years and capacity is fully allocated through the 2030s 4. Osaka’s projected 170% capacity growth is within reach for equipment vendors and power developers 4.
